How Does A Banjo Bolt Work?


A banjo bolt is a very common tool used in automotive vehicles. More specifically, it is used to connect brake fluid lines to brake cylinders. Due to their flexible shape and the curated design to allow for fluid to pass, they are a very useful appliance for this particular need.

 A few steps go into connecting a banjo bolt. First, a washer goes into the bolt, followed by an inlet ring, which is then followed by a second washer. The inlet ring contains a concave space around the inside perimeter, which is why it does not have to align with the center of the bolt.  When the bolt is tightened, a path is provided for the fluid to flow into the barbed inlet into a hole in the side of the bolt and then down through a hole concentric with the bolt’s axis. The flow seems easy to follow.

Banjo bolts are also referred to as internally relieved bolts, as they have hollow interiors. Due to the presence of this interior cavity, fluid easily enters and exits through a small hole on the side. The bolt then locks into the system to control the fluid pressure and performance.

 It is due to these reasons that banjo bolts are used in applications such as hydraulic power systems, power steering fluid, brake caliper connectors, and most notably in clutch and brake systems in automobiles.
