What Are Threaded Fasteners?
A fastener that has an internal or external screw thread is called a threaded fastener. Among these, the most common types are, nut and bolt, and a screw.
The objects we see around us, most of their parts are joined together to produce the final product. There are several ways to join parts together, one of the ways is by using mechanical fasteners.
Mechanical fasteners are divided into two categories, permanent and non-permanent fasteners. Non-permanent fasteners are further divided into, general and threaded fasteners. Out of the non-permanent fasteners the most commonly used fasteners are threaded fasteners.
A way to differentiate between a threaded fastener and non-threaded fastener is by looking at its strength.
There are various types of threaded fasteners-
1. Banjo bolts- Banjo bolts are machines that use magnets in order to attach steel tubes together.
These bolts are used in the automobile industries, oil and pipeline industries and are also used for building bridges, buildings, etc.
2. Stud bolts- Stud bolts are considered to be some sort of specialised connectors mostly because it is used to close flanges and metal parts. Flange connections are made with a special screw which is called the stud bolt.
It has a threaded rod which is fastened with a hexagon nut on both the sides.
It is usually used in the gas and oil industry. It is widely used in the petrochemical industry.
Other industries where stud bolt is used are, mining and construction industries. It is a basic component in the cement, sewage, water, and automobile industry.
3. Self-tapping Screws- A self-tapping screw can tap a hole on its own because it is driven into the material. These screws are used only to describe a particular type of thread-cutting screw with the intention to produce a thread which has relatively soft material, except wood screws.
These screws have different names. Most of the time, they are called metal screws, tapping screws, tapper screws, or sheet metal screws. The screws’ tip also comes in various shapes: pointed, flat, or blunt, and are described as thread-cutting, thread-forming, or thread-rolling.
