Different Types Of Hex Head Screws

 

Hex bolts are also called the hexagon head bolts. They have hexagonal head which is tightened with a socket or a wrench. These bolts are usually used to fasten metal to metal, wood to metal or wood to wood. 

So, they are usually used in the wood industry, steel industry, and construction industry as they are suitable for bridge, dock, building projects. 

There are various types of Hex head screws available in the market, their types are-

1. Self-drilling hex screws- A self-drilling screw can tap a hole on its own because it is driven into the material. These screws are used only to describe a particular type of thread-cutting screw with the intention to produce a thread which has relatively soft material, except wood screws. 

These screws have different names. Most of the time, they are called metal screws, tapping screws, tapper screws, or sheet metal screws. The screws’ tip also comes in various shapes: pointed, flat, or blunt, and are described as thread-cutting, thread-forming, or thread-rolling. 

2. Internal hex screws- These screws have an internal-facing head and are mostly used in furniture pieces. An allen wrench is required for their installation and removal. 

3. Combi screw- These are combination screws also known as combi screws. These refer to any type of screw that is able to combine more than one head style. Phillips head combinations are slotted for efficient use with a standard screw driver and hex screws for hex or hex fasteners. 

4. Lag screws- These are heavy duty fasteners which are used for lumber, landscaping, and thick sheet metal applications. They support more weight than the standard hex screws and are large. These screws are usually used for wood and sheet metal material which require a high torque level. 

5. Sheet metal screws- These have in-built washers where the head meets the shank. To effectively penetrate into wood or sheet metal, these have a sharp point at the end. 

6. Zip screws- These are self-piercing hex washer head screws. 

7. Socket head cap screw- These have a large head and a cylindrical shaft. The diameter of the head is larger than the threaded portion, providing a positive mechanical stop when the screw is tightened.
