Different Types Of Dowel Pins And Their Uses

Dowel pins are those pins which are usually used for alignment and fixture purposes. These are cylindrical tools which are designed to make machinery safe by fastening different pieces together. These are usually associated with socket screws. These pins absorb load, which allows the socket screw to take up the tensile load. These pins are hardened with an internal thread.

There are various kinds of dowel pins like-

1.    Precision pins- These dowel pins are mostly made of steel or stainless steel. Their length varies depending on the manufacturer and these can easily be modified. These pins are common types of pins for hinges, pivot, shafts, and jigs.

2.    Grooved pins- These pins are not so commonly used and are available in few sizes only. They have a small groove which gets tightened, creating tension and then holding the pin in place. The pin that is remaining is used for pivots or hinges.

3.    Oversized pins- These are oversized pins which are available in nominal sizes. These are usually used as replacement parts.

4.    Standard pins- These pins are made of stainless steel, steel, brass or aluminum. The length is based on how the manufacturer wants it and can have variations as well- flat, chamfered, rounded, etc.

5.    Pull out pins- These have one side chamfered and the other side tapped. This allows the chamfered end into a fixture and pin to be removed from the side which is tapped.

These pins are used in a variety of places, like-

1)    In furniture making- Dowel pins are usually found in the furniture. They join two furniture parts with each other. These pins can be inserted in the hollow tube like sections to join the parts to each other.

2)    In shelf making- Shelves mostly have dowel pins and these are usually designed with hollowed tube like sections.

3)    In machine making- These pins are used to make machines and machines have dowel pins for better and accurate alignment. These pins help in safely joining the parts of the machines with precision.
